From Oakville to Abydos
Friday, October 23
to Sunday, November 21, 2015
at Erchless Estate
Discover the life and art of Oakville Egyptologist Amice Calverley (1896-1959). This exhibit explores Calverley's extraordinary archaeological accomplishments of the 1930s when she was the field director of the Egypt Exploration Society's epigraphic mission to Abydos. There she was given the incredible task of recording the decoration in the Temple of Seti I, where she produced hundreds of images which were later published in volumes funded by J. D. Rockefeller through the Oriental Institute of Chicago. Thanks to the loan of artifacts from the Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre, painted reliefs of the Seti I tomb, relics from Ancient Egypt, photographs, personal artifacts and stories will be displayed to bring one of Oakville's most fascinating past residents to life.
This October, we bring Ancient Egypt to life with fun and informative activities for all ages. Visit our Events page for special exhibit-related programming.
Also visit Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre to explore more of Amice’s treasures and works in their new exhibit, Amice Calverley: A Legend & Legacy, on from November 8, 2015 to January 3, 2016.
