Debbi de Souza

World-renowned Egyptologist Zahi Hawass will visit SA to present guest talks on the occasion of the Tutankhamun – His Tomb and His Treasures exhibition.

World famous Egyptologist and archaeologist Dr Zahi Hawass will be in South Africa later this month to present two exciting multimedia presentations about his Adventures in Archaeology on the occasion of the Tutankhamun – His Tomb and His Treasures exhibition currently on at Silverstar Casino, Mogale City, Muldersdrift.

A first for South Africa, the not-to-be-missed Zahi Hawass presentations take place in Silverstar’s Platinum Ballroom on Tuesday, 27 January and Wednesday, 28 January 2015 at 19h00 on both days.

Dr Zahi Hawass is one of the most renowned archaeologists recognised globally for his countless excavations, research projects, publications, television documentaries and lecture tours that testify to his prolific and esteemed career. Until the political upheaval in Egypt in 2011 he was the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

Over the course of the approximately 90-minute multimedia presentation, Dr Hawass will talk about the search for the tomb of Queen Nefertiti, new insights into the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, and exciting research into the tombs of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony. He will also introduce the mystery of the great pyramids and the Sphinx, as well as the discovery of the tombs of the pyramid builders. The discovery of the family of King Tut and the mystery of the Golden King's sudden death, as well as the discovery of the mummy of Queen Hatshepsut and the search for Queen Nefertiti's mummy also feature.

Biographical anecdotes and personal experiences from his many years of scientific endeavour will round off his presentation.

“Pyramids, Mummies and Cleopatra: Recent Discoveries” will be presented at 19h00 at Silverstar Casino on 27 and 28 January 2015. For just R200 per person, guests receive a welcome drink and canapés on arrival plus entrance to the feature presentation by Dr Hawass as well as the signing of his latest book, Discovering Tutankhamun: From Howard Carter to DNA – available for purchase after the talk. Guests may also take the opportunity to visit the internationally acclaimed exhibition Tutankhamun – His Tomb and His Treasures prior to the presentation for the combined price of only R300.

There are over 1000 exquisitely reconstructed burial treasures produced by the finest Egyptian craftsmen under scientific supervision. These exact replicas coupled with state-of-the art technology and video material provide a vivid illustration of the culture and spiritual world of the ancient Egyptians.
